Several years ago I found myself parenting a toddler for the very first time.

Each day I'd roll out of bed resolved to survive another day of toddler tantrums and discipline, milk spills and arguments over which one of us would button the coat buttons that day, and whatever else my toddler decided to throw at me.

I knew I was the one responsible for teaching him and training him.

I knew he wasn't trying to be offensive or upset me on purpose.

It's just the way we're born.

Selfish.

And in need of a Savior.

But quite honestly, by the time my toddler reached the ripe age of two I was desperate for something to help me not just spend the days telling him what not to do. I wanted to feel like I was sowing seeds of hope into our days, giving him a vision for what a life lived for Christ should look like.

As I prayed, the Lord led me to passages like Colossians 3:1-17 and Ephesians 4:22-24 where Paul talks about putting off the old self and putting on the new self in Christ Jesus.

As I wrestled with how best to teach my child and keep my sanity, I eventually realized that I needed my son to know the difference between sowing to the flesh (sin) and sowing to the spirit (life).

I wanted him to know the difference between godly behavior and sinful behavior.

I wanted him to have tangible, multi-sensory experiences with what is good in order for him to better grasp the truth of God’s Word as he got older.

This is how the Fruit of the Spirit Curriculum for Toddlers came to be.

Through trial and error, a whole lot of research, and even more prayer, God impressed on my heart to use Galatians 5:22-23 as my guide in teaching my son what it looks like to sow to the spirit and not to the flesh.

Galatians 5:22-23 says, "But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control; against such things there is no law."

As I began to teach my son this passage, breaking down each fruit of the Spirit, spending time acting out the character trait, and memorizing Scripture together, I started to realize how desperately I needed to be intentional about putting off the old self and putting on the new self.

Understanding and growing in the fruit of the Spirit isn't just for my kids.

It's for me too.

Downloadable Fruit of the Spirit Grow Together Bundle

With the help of the Fruit of the Spirit Grow Together Bundle, you will take a deep dive into each fruit of the Spirit, spending 21 days reading meditating on what the Bible has to say about each one while simultaneously teaching your toddler or preschooler about each fruit of the Spirit.

Because I'm betting, if you have a toddler or preschooler at home, you need some extra grace to produce the fruit of the Spirit in you and not just teach it to your child.

I certainly did!

As I taught my son what it means to "love your neighbor as yourself," I was convicted of how often I fell short of God's best in this area.

As I taught my son the difference between a hard heart and a soft heart, I was convicted of how often I let bitterness take root instead of allowing the Lord's kindness to lead me to repentance.

As I taught my son his need for self-control, I was convicted at how often I lost self-control as I gave into the incessant cries of my precious little one.
